Taking a Closer Look at the Digital Video Disc

When the Blu-ray was released, many people anticipated the demise of the DVD. But several years after the former was introduced in the market, it is clear to see that it failed to supersede the latter format.

The good ole digital versatile disk stands still and is continuously used widely across industries—from movies to home videos and e-books. Thus, out of curiosity as to why it remains a popular format, we decided to take a closer look at this innovative technology.

The Construction

A DVD is made of a thin, circular disk of clear plastic and metal, having a standard size of 4.75 inches in diameter (equivalent to 12 centimetres) and 0.02 inch in thickness. It has a small hole in the centre to keep it in place during spinning and, most especially, to solve the centring and traction issues.

Digital data is encoded into a metal disc (usually aluminium) to create copies of itself, and a laser device is used to burn pits (small holes) into a microscopic metal layer. These pits work in correspondence to the binary ones. While the land, the disc untouched by the laser, corresponds to the binary zeros.  After the holes are burned, a protective and transparent layer is then coated to the metal.

The Origin

The development of the technology started in the 1990s when filmmakers saw how CDs appealed to music lovers. Thus, attempting to create a product that would improve the audio and video qualities of taped motion pictures, movie companies worked on the digital video format. And the result of such effort is the DVD.

The Advantage

In comparison to VHS, digital video discs provide better entertainment experience. It has sharper images and clearer sounds. What is more, it is easier to store and maintain. It can hold greater amount of data, too.

And with regard to its more advanced counterpart Blu-ray, its main advantage no doubt is the cost and availability. This is because while BD offers much better image and audio quality, not to mention, lots of special features, it is steeply priced and the number of titles made in this format is comparably smaller.
